SESSIONS
The Lindgren Summer Camp
operates Monday through Thursday for 8 weeks. Campers may be enrolled
for the entire 8-week session or the first or second 4 weeks and for a
full or half day. The full day runs from 9:30 to 3:00. The morning
session is from 9:30 to 12:30. Before-camp care is available starting at
8:00 and after-camp care until 5:30.
THE SETTING
A
one-of-a-kind camp in Bergen County with a farm and country atmosphere.
We have resident farm animals, organic vegetable gardens and direct
access to the neighboring Nature Center woods, ponds, and streams
Three and one-half acres of knolls, sand, and pines
provide space in a natural setting for fresh air,
exercise, and innovative play. All equipment is designed
for physical development and active learning Tents, cabins,
and pavilions house the art, ceramics, woodworking, stitchery, games and
nature centers. The school classrooms serve as changing rooms for
swimming and provide indoor spaces for rainy days. Sports fields,
swimming pools and the water spray park are highlights of our summer
program.

THE CHILDREN
The camp is for children
aged three to eleven. Three year olds have their own separate
half-acre camp (the
Hill camp) and their own staff of counselors. The counselors are veteran teachers of 3 year olds, specializing
in TLC and toilet training.
4 year olds and new 5 year olds have their own “Mother
Hen” counselors to
facilitate their participation
in the many activities of the main camp.
THE CAMP DAY
The Lindgren Summer Camp
is unique because it offers an unstructured program. The children are
free to choose any of the well-supervised activities as well as their own
companionship during the day.
Each camper is assigned to a troop with an
experienced counselor who will act as a resource person,
collecting the campers for their daily swim lessons, lunch, and the
all-camp sing-a-longs. A swim time is assigned to each
camper.
Swim lessons and water orientation are provided by
our Red Cross certified lifeguards for four to nine year olds. Swim
lessons are scheduled in small groups during the morning. The pool is
open for free swim in the afternoon.
Campers bring a bag
lunch Mondays through Wednesdays. On Thursdays, we
provide a bar-be-que lunch.
RAINY DAY
In the event of rain, we
utilize our school classrooms as well as outdoor shelters. All the
usual activities continue, except swimming and field sports. The three
and four year olds move into classrooms while the older children can go
between activities, all of which are covered.
THE STAFF
The camp is well staffed with a counselor-to-camper ratio of 1 to 5. A
head teacher supervises each of the activity areas. Most staff members
are veteran teachers with specialized areas of expertise. Counselors
are CPR trained,
our
lifeguards are certified by the Red Cross, and we have a full time nurse
on staff.

ACTIVITIES
The activities your
child can choose from to spend his day include:

NATURE
Lindgren Camp has year-round
resident farm animals: goats, donkey, horse, chickens and a turkey. In
the summer our nature cabin and aviary expand the menagerie to include
fish, amphibians, reptiles, insects, and birds. The children can hold
and pet most of the animals. The camp naturalist conducts daily
explorations at the adjacent Closter Nature Center. These explorations
include hikes, stream walking, and capturing live specimens to observe.
ORGANIC GARDENING
Children sow, plant,
transplant, fertilize and harvest a wide variety of vegetables, herbs,
and flowers. Eating is the best part!
RECREATION
The Lindgren campus is a unique
and expansive natural setting with areas of sand, lawns, fields, shady
oaks and pines. Geologically, we are situated on acres of sand. In
summer we run water through the sand to create rivers, lakes, dams,
bridges for good old mud play. This is a favorite activity for many.
The children can move freely on the
playground
choosing to dig in the sandpit, play with trucks, shovels, buckets, ride
on the tricycle highway, climb trees, and play on climbers, swings, and
slides.

SPORTS
Two high school athletes organize the
field sports of volleyball, soccer, kickball, basketball, T-ball. Each
game is informally chosen by a group of participants each day and then
teams are chosen and the game begins. On special occasions footraces,
relay races and rollerblading are organized.
YOGA
Each
week a professional yoga instructor offers indoor yoga in a large
air-conditioned studio. For ages 4 and up.
THEATER
A local performance artist
brings stories and skits to our stage. Children plan props and costumes
and effects for their productions.
MUSIC
We love to sing. Campers and their
counselors may join our guitar playing teacher Jane in songs and
movement to music. Our talented counselors provide opportunities for
campers to create percussion instruments and experiment with sounds in
our drumming circle.
GAMES
The games tent offers ping
pong, foosball, giant floor chess, Nok-hockey, as well as table games of
chess, checkers, cards, and other popular board games. Children can
challenge a friend or a counselor.

EVENING CAMPOUT
Once each session, 7-9 year
olds are invited to stay until 9:O0 PM when they will enjoy canoeing, a
barbeque, relay races, evening swim and a bonfire with ghost stories.
THE EXPEDITIONERS
